Autofrettage
The autofrettage techinique increases the fatigue strength of tubes by costant pressure into its inner layers. This method works on the relationship between the internal and the external part, where the first is permanently deformed.
During the autofrettage practice, a strong pressure takes place in the tubular components that causes a failure of the inner layers. At the end of this phase, the induced pressure is released and the internal compressive residual stresses prevent the internal area from returning to its original shape.
The autofrettage process prevents the creation of cracks and improves the final product strength by increasing its duration up to 1.8 times. In this way, the maintenance intervals are decreased and there is a potential cost reduction.
